Study Guide for Class 1

Ok, so you have tried Learn Spanish Class 1, and you think it is too fast…

Try talking to a cab driver in Madrid.

Bueno, entonces… is fast, really fast. But just like Tetris or Guitar Hero (and even Grand Theft Auto), you get used to it after a few repetitions, and you’ll start learning things without even realizing it, just by keeping up with the story.

Fast also means you’ll miss things, which is ok. Give it a whirl! Then come back here and check out the extra support materials.

You made it through Class 1. Felicitaciones!

Think it was fast? Most students need to watch each class 2 or 3 times to really get everything, and every time you watch it you’ll get something new. That’s how it was designed! So don’t hesitate to go back and watch the class again or listen to the audio before completing the exercises below.

What’s even better? Once you’re done with class 6, we’ll have you go back and watch this class again – you won’t believe how much you’ve improved!

INFORMACIÓN DE REFERENCIA

The Pizarra Mágica reviewed:Pizarro example key codes

Make sure to review the Color and Symbol Key provided until you are familiar with all the colors and symbols on the screen.

Remember, these are to be used as a guide. For example, the Argentine flag appears when the subject ‘vos’ is used, but ‘vos’ is used all over the Spanish speaking world.

Check out where here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voseo.

This flag will also appear when a word is particular of the Argentine dialect.

See the Color and Symbol Key (http://www.generallinguistics.com/bueno-entonces-key.html) for more information on other symbols!

Grammar/Language Tips: VOS
Vos is used extensively as the primary form of the second person singular (you) in central-eastern Argentina and Uruguay, in Paraguay, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica.

Vos is also present in other countries as a regionalism, such as parts of Venezuela, Southern Mexico, Colombia, Andean Peru and in areas of Ecuador.

The rest of the time, you should use Tu eres instead of ‘Vos sos’.

Pronominal Pronouns:

  • Reflexive pronouns are used when a person or thing acts on itself. English example: John cut himself.
  • Reciprocal pronouns refer to a reciprocal relationship. English example: They do not like each other.

Pronunciation Help:

Mouth for pronunciationSpanish is a phonetic language meaning that letters have only one sound and this sound will not change depending on the position of this letter in a word.

This rule has five exceptions in Spanish:

  • L sounds like the “L” in look but LL – is pronounced like the letters “SH” in shower in Argentina (30:55 in the lesson)
  • RR – sounds stronger and repeted when it appears doubled like in perro or at the beginning of a word
  • G when followed by “a”, “o” and “u” sounds like  the “g” in “go” but when followed by “e” or “i” it sounds like a stronger version of the letter “H” in the word “house” (30:20 in the lesson)
  • Very much like in English, the letter “C”, when followed by “e” and “i”, sounds like  the letter “S” in “sun” but when followed by “a”, “o” and “u” sound like the letter “C” in the word “cool”
  • The letter “S” when followed by a consonant sounds like the letter “H” in the word “house”

Also, Check out this interactive diagram of where your tongue should be when you are pronouncing the letters in Spanish:  http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/spanish/frameset.html
