INFORMACIÓN DE REFERENCIA

IR versus VENIR:
IR (to go) and VENIR (to come) are often confused in Spanish because the direction of the speaker decides which verb to use (and it is something that we don’t have in English!)

Essentially if the person is going to the location where the speaker is, use VENIR. If the person/speaker is going somewhere else, use IR.

Venir and IR

For example:

¿Quieres venir a mi casa ahora? (Do you want to come to my house now?)
Sí, ahora voy a tu casa. (Yes, now I go to your house).
Vengo del trabajo. (I come from work).
Voy al trabajo. (I go to work.)

Also, just to complicate things further, both of these verb conjugate irregularly. Check out the chart below to see how they conjugate:

Verb IR VENIR
YO Voy Vengo
TÚ / VOS Vas Vienes / Venés
ÉL / ELLA/ USTED Va Viene
NOSOTROS Vamos Venemos
ELLOS/ ELLAS/ USTEDES Van Vienen

LLEVAR versus TRAER:
LLEVAR (to carry) and TRAER (to bring) are two more verbs that depend on the direction of the speaker.

Use TRAER when bringing something to the location of the speaker and LLEVAR when carrying something to another place.

llevar traer
For example:

¿Qué llevo a tu casa? (What do I carry to your house?)
Puedes traer una cerveza. (You can bring a beer).
¿Puede traerme un café con leche? (Can you bring me a coffee with milk?)
¿Puede ser para llevar? (Can it be to go- aka- Can I have it as take away?)

While Llevar conjugates normally, watch out for Traer, especially the first person singular:

Verb LLEVAR TRAER
YO Llevo Traigo
TÚ / VOS Llevas Traes
ÉL / ELLA / USTED Lleva Trae
NOSOTROS Llevamos Traemos
ELLOS/ ELLAS/ USTEDES Llevan Traen
