INFORMACIÓN DE REFERENCIA

Diphthongs:
Diphthongs are when there are two vowels (A,E,I,O,U) next to each other resulting in a sound that merges together. In English diphthongs are everywhere and make a completely different sound much to the frustration of English learners. However, Spanish also uses the combined sound but to a lesser extent. Just try to sound a little more suave when you see these combos.

Check it out:

A+I = Paisaje
A+U = Pausa
E+I = Peine
E+U = Neutro
I+A = Viajar
I+E = Viejo
I+O = Medio
O+I = Oiga
U+A = Agua
U+E = Puedo
U+O = Arduo

IMPORTANT: In Spanish, if an Accent (´) is present, the two vowels are pronounced separately.

Dependent Prepositions:
David says PrepositionsPrepositions are parts of speech that tell you the location, direction and time relationship between two things. Common ones are ‘in’, ‘on’, ‘between’, ‘through’.

Dependent Prepositions are prepositions that are always used with a Specific Verb. For instance ‘TRATAR‘ (to try) is always followed by the preposition ‘DE’.

In Spanish, some prepositions are used in the same way, such as ‘Vivir con’ (to live with) or ‘Ir a’ (to go to), but others are not at all, for example, ‘Soñar con’ (to dream of) or ‘Pensar en’ (to think about).

Even more confusing, some prepositions can completely change the meaning of the verb preceding it. Take, for instance, ‘Quedarse sin’ (to be left without) versus ‘Quedarse en’ (to get stuck). Another one that you already know is ‘Tener‘ (to have) versus ‘Tener que’ (to have to).

ESTAR/ HABER/ HACER:
Hay solWhen describing the weather in Spanish you will usually use the following verbs: Está (it is…), Hay (there is/are…), and Hace (it makes…).

There are also a few climatic verbs that don’t need another verb, such as “Llover” (to rain) and “Nevar” (to snow). These verbs will usually appear it the third person singular and both conjugate irregularly. So you should just remember “Llueve” (it rains) and “Nieva” (it snows).

Check out a handy, dandy chart below to see it laid out:

ESTÁ… HAY… HACE… … (verb only)
…Nublado (cloudy) …Sol (sun) …Frío (cold) Llueve (it’s rainy)
…Despejado (clear) …Viento (wind) …Calor (heat) Nieva (it’s snowy)
…Oscuro (dark) …Tormenta (storm)
…Niebla (fog)

Los Estaciones (Seasons):
Remember that in South America the seasons are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. Spanish learners in North America, Europe and Asia might get a little confused at first!
