Grammar / Language tips:

PRONOUNS:

This class you were introduced to two more types of pronouns, Direct Object Pronouns and Indirect Object Pronouns. These will be explained further in Week 3, so you don’t need to memorize them right away. However, it is good to look over how they work, as it can be a little tricky to master.

Here are the Three pronouns you now know:

Subject Pronouns:
These refer to the subject of the sentence, or the person/animal/thing doing the action. You know them already: YO (I), VOS/TÚ (You), EL/ELLA/USTED (He/She/You-formal), NOSOTROS (Us) and ELLOS/ELLAS/USTEDES (They/Y’all).

REMEMBER: In Spanish the Subject pronoun is often not there, because the conjugated verb already tells you who the subject is.

pilot with flowers

Apparently Jorge is a pilot...

Direct Object Pronouns:
The Direct object in the sentence answers the question “What”? In the sentence “Jorge sends flowers to me”, the direct object is ‘flowers‘. To use a direct object pronoun, you replace the direct object in the sentence. “Jorge sends them to me”.

REMEMBER: In Spanish, the direct object pronoun must agree in number and gender of the noun (the direct object) that it is replacing. It also goes BEFORE the verb.

SEE IT IN SPANISH:
Jorge envía las flores para me
Jorge las envía para me

Indirect pronoun 'te'

Spot the Indirect pronoun- the person receiving the action

Indirect Object Pronouns:
The Indirect Object is the person or animal that receives the action / direct object. It answers the question “Who?/ What? (if it is an animal)” in the sentence. In the sentence “Jorge sends flowers to me“, the indirect object is ‘me‘.

SEE IT IN SPANISH:
Jorge envía las flores para me
Jorge me envía las flores

Check out this table below to see all the Subject, Direct object and Indirect Object pronouns

Subject Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns Indirect Object Pronouns
YO me me
TÚ / VOS te te
ÉL/ELLA/USTED lo/la le *
NOSOTROS nos nos
ELLOS/ELLAS/USTEDES los/las les *

Indirect and Direct Object Pronouns:
If you want to use both the Indirect and Direct Object pronouns, remember that they BOTH come before the verb (unless there is an infinitive, but that will come LATER!). Also, to avoid confusion, a few of the Indirect Objects become SE, if both pronouns are used, these are marked with *in the chart above.

SEE IT IN SPANISH:
Jorge envía las flores para Marie. Jorge gives the flowers to Marie.
Jorge las envía para Marie. Jorge gives them to Marie.
Jorge le envía las flores. Jorge gives the flowers to her.
Jorge se las envía. Jorge gives them to her.

Possessive adjectives

Remember: Possessive adjectives must agree in number (and gender for 'Nuestro')

Possessives:
There are also Possessive Pronouns and Possessive Adjectives. Both must agree with the OBJECT of the sentence. In the case of Possessive Pronouns, they have to agree in gender and number of the noun they are replacing.

Possessive Adjectives only have to agree in number, except for “Nuestro/a/os/as”.

Both Possessive Adjectives and Pronouns were introduced in the Study Guide for Class 6, and you can review them here:
