Grammar / Language tips:
VERB + QUE:
When placing QUE after these verbs: “Saber” (to know facts), ”Creer” (to believe), “Pensar” (to think), QUE then means “THAT”.
For example:
“Creo que los hombres son estúpidos” (I believe that men are stupid)
“Sabes que la palabra ‘esposa’ no es amable” (You know that the word ‘esposa’ is not nice.)
“Ellos piensan que es gracioso” (They think that it is funny).
Prepositions:
Prepositions can be tricky things to get your head around. Essentially they describe the relationship between two things in regards to LOCATION (on, in), DIRECTION (forward, through) and TIME (before, during).
The important thing to remember is that there is not always a reason for WHY we use certain prepositions with specific verbs, and this is true in English and Spanish.
For instance, in English we say “I’m talking ON the telephone”, while in Spanish you say “Estoy hablando POR el telefono” (I am talking for the phone).
Another: in English we say, “The money is ON the table” and in Spanish it goes, “ La plata está EN la mesa” (The money/silver is in the table).
Unfortunately, you need to memorize which prepositions go with which verbs, as there is no steadfast rule. See all the prepositions in Spanish in the glossary and pay attention when Jimena speaks to see how she uses them!
Days of the week:
Review Reflexive Verbs and Adverbs:
You might have noticed that David and Jimena were practicing some reflexive verbs. Don’t remember how they work? Check out Study Guide 6 for a flashback: http://blog.buenoentonces.com/2010/12/study-guide-for-class-6/#info
They also reviewed how to make ADVERBS, which are very handy for describing what actions are like. You first saw this in Class 5, so look again if you want a refresher:
http://blog.buenoentonces.com/2010/12/study-guide-class-5/#info
TIME:
You can tell the time using the verb SER + la(s), because the noun hora (hour) is feminine. Notice that with most hours you use son las… , but with one o’clock you use es la…

Use y (and) to add minutes past the hour. You can also use cuarto (quarter) or quince (fifteen) for a quarter of an hour. Notice media (half) or treinta (thirty) can be used to mean half an hour.
When telling time past the half hour, you subtract the minutes from the hour and use menos (less), like this:

That quiz was quite good…been very disappointed with the quizzes up to now…this one actually tests Spanish material covered in the course like telling the time, days of the week and conjugating verbs whilst the others have been too focussed on fun and games rather than really testing Spanish content…more of the same please. If I have not passed because of a fun and games question I move on to the next question anyway.
